Stop Acting Enlightened! This Yoga Teacher is Calling You the F*ck Out

In the bigness of their hearts, yogis are some of the most judgmental fuckers on this planet. “As a yoga instructor I truly don’t understand how promoting bone broth and paleo diets can possibly be seen as being in line with Ahimsa. And the truth is that it isn’t. Ahimsa is known as the most important Yama, and yet it is widely watered down or outright ignored by the Western yoga community. I encourage you to begin living and sharing the values you pretend to endorse.” This comment was recently left on YogiApproved.com. One of the most reliable – and...

Clear the Clutter: Spring is a Time to Remember.

If winter is a time to be hold up hibernating with depression and regression, then spring is a time to be remembering, clearing and creating. Sometimes in the light of spring’s initial rays, it’s tempting for me to forget that these first few enthusiastic forays are often also the spastic, last rattle of winter’s woes. Wind whips last year’s most stubborn leaves from trees, while frost kills those shoots too enthusiastic to wait with wisdom for winter to fully whither. Colds sweep through studios, schools, and workplaces…psychic fallout from the holidays linger… Seems we might be wise to remember that...

Aiming the Arrow: How to Find Our Creative Flow.

We all have a creative capacity within us, but is it also flowing from us? Hugh Prather once wrote, “If the desire to write is not accompanied by actual writing, then the desire is not to write.” As far as I can tell, it’s the only thing of note he ever wrote. Whether our desire is to write or to create in some other capacity, here are a few simple steps to excavate a breakthrough, to get the juices to flow and take the steps to grow your vision. Get Clear  I got into archery last summer. In between firing...

Swaha Some Sh*t.

Last year was weird for me—bouts of sobriety and celibacy contributed to my ongoing quest for clarity. In between Vipassana and other forms of masochism, I reconnected with my estranged father. I went all the way to Michigan to sit across from him. I made the choice to honor brand new voices and cravings within—stability, dependability, reliability—all qualities in the world I’d like to see. Somewhere along the road of last year, I realized I have to be willing to offer precisely that which I wished to receive. If I want to have a father, I have to first be...

Love Un/Requited.

I saw my dad a few months ago for the first time in 11 years. Before that it had been 13 years. We spent most of our time silent, using our tongues less than our ears—turns out you can’t catch up on 35 years. The day passed in a very manly—and pleasant—Midwestern way. We lifted weights, shot pistols, ate burgers and talked about women. Women meaning my sisters (his estranged daughters), our lovers and my mother. At one point, late in the day, he plucked a picture from a secret hiding spot tucked behind a framed copy of the Lord’s...

Yoga Greed Syndrome.

I woke up today worried in a big way. You see, several of my dear friends and colleagues have, as of late, been dangerously and deeply affected by a condition sweeping the nation—Yoga Greed Syndrome. As a community we are all in peril of this nascent outbreak becoming an entrenched epidemic. Not sure if your studio, your city, or even you yourself may be suffering from this horrible affliction? Never fear, because several symptoms have been identified in the early fight to stem the tide. You’re sense of service may have been unconsciously compromised by Yoga Greed Syndrome if— You are...

I’M HAVING A REVERSE MID-LIFE CRISIS: ON GIVING ONESELF A PROSTATE EXAMINATION.

I turned 35 last week, and I’m pretty sure I’m having a mid-life crisis… Only, so far as the first (presumed) half of my life was dominated by rascality, and slightly above-average — but wholly appropriate — delinquency (a prolonged stint of what a geezer or two might still call ballyhoo) my mid-life crisis has made me more… well, responsible. “What’s being 35 feel like?” my little brother asked me. “Fuckin’ old,” I said without hesitation. Witness: I recently bought a dependable car — a Toyota Tacoma, which is a really badass, girl’s truck if you don’t know it (at...

Why I Choose Celibacy.

Sexuality is an interesting topic to teach on, especially in a public yoga class. Sweat pouring down sculpted, scantily clad bodies—heat and humidity, breath and energy warming us “from the inside out”—well, you get it. But as it’s one of very few topics that I have explored extensively, the honor fell to me naturally to broach this often unbroachable topic. In a world where porn is a $97 billion business (ranking it higher than the yoga and pet industries combined in this country) our cultural unwillingness to open our own respective closets seems silly at best and shameful at worst....
